BOOK 'THE OTHER SIDE'

BOOK 'THE OTHER SIDE'

Publisher: Steidl

This is an expanded and updated version of Nan Goldin's foundational book, 'The Other Side', originally published in 1993. It features a revised introduction by Goldin, and for the first time, the voices of those whose stories are represented. Published at a moment when discourse around gender and sexual orientation is evolving, 'The Other Side' traces part of the history underpinning this new visibility.

The earliest photographs in the book date from the 1970s, when Goldin was living in Boston with a group of drag queens and documenting their glamour and vulnerability. In the early 1980s, Goldin chronicled the lives of transgender friends in New York as AIDS began to devastate her community. In the 1990s, she documented the explosion of drag as a social phenomenon in New York, Berlin, Bangkok and the Philippines, photographing their public personas while revealing their real lives behind the scenes. Goldin's most recent photographs are intimate, tenderness-filled portraits of some of her closest friends. 'The Other Side' is her tribute to the queens she has loved, many of whom she has lost over the past four decades.
